Riviera Pines in San Diego sold out its entire April guest pass inventory — 240 slots — in 11 hours, which is a record that the previous record holder (a charity tournament with a celebrity draw) is not thrilled about. What changed in April was exactly one thing: Ruby, 25, a caddie who joined the rotation in March after moving from Sacramento, and whose Instagram had about 4,000 followers until a golf blogger posted a candid of her on hole 8 and that number became 280,000 by Monday morning. (The blogger is now her unofficial PR person. He doesn't charge. He's not subtle about why.) Ruby is, by multiple accounts from members, an exceptional caddie who genuinely understands course management and club selection. She's also studying sports marketing, which, after April, suddenly makes a lot of sense. The May guest passes went live this morning. They're already gone.
