Twenty-three minutes is a useful amount of time. Not rude enough to start a fight, not fast enough to look hungry. She sends three plain words, maybe even a boring little “haha okay,” and the delay does the rest.

He starts doing the unpaid labor himself. Was she out? Was someone beside her? Did she type and delete something better? Maybe she was folding laundry. Maybe her battery was low. Maybe her thumb was resting on the screen while she decided how much rope to hand back.

Her posture changes without an announcement

Her face keeps behaving. Her body does not.

She straightens by almost nothing. One shoulder drops. Her walk slows half a step, and the hallway suddenly feels too narrow for a normal walk. She is still talking to whoever came in with her, still nodding at the right places, still pretending the room did not change.

Then the bag switches sides. Hair goes behind one ear. Her hips find a cleaner line than the conversation asked for. If she laughs it off later, fine. The hallway already got the first answer.
